NFL Odds

The lines and NFL odds for this week are up but make sure you take the time to understand how the betting lines work before you place your next wager.

To comprehend NFL odds you must first understand what they mean from the sportsbooks point of view. Never lose sight of the facts that the sportsbooks are not gamblers but act as businessmen running a sound financial machine acting as middlemen between 2 bettors. By doing so he is guaranteeing himself a profit by holding the money and recording the wagers between the 2 parties.

When you see the NFL odds come out and you see the Chicago Bears -2.5 against the Detroit Lions, his goal is to get an equivalent amount of bets and money, with half of them taking Chicago -2.5 and other half playing the underdog Lions +2.5 points. All parties involved are risking $110 to win $100 plus their money back if the wager is a winner. That extra $10 is the sportsbooks fee and each losing bet is his profit for booking the game.

To explain further, using the current Chicago/Detroit example, if the 2.5 point spread is accurate in the public eyes, (meaning he gets equal action on both sides) he will be turning a profit regardless of result. If the sportsbooks have taken in $50,000 on Chicago -2.5 and $50,000 on Detroit +2.5 they have a total of $100,000 in action on this game. After the game result the books will have made a $5,000 profit regardless of which team wins.

Does that sound like gambling to you? Now you see why we consider the books to be more like brokers or agents that charge a fee for their services. If he can attract equal action on both the favorite and the underdog he will make 5% on every sporting event played.
